“Who’ll start the bidding for me?”
“A dollar, a dollar”; then two!” “Only
two? Two dollars, and who’ll make it three? Three dollars, once; three
dollars twice; going for three..”
But no, from the room, far back, a
gray-haired man came forward and picked up the bow; Then, wiping the dust
from the old violin, and tightening the loose strings, he played a melody
pure and sweet as caroling angel sings.
The music ceased, and the auctioneer, with a voice that was quiet and low,
said; “What am I bid for the old violin?” And he held it up with the bow.
A thousand dollars, and who’ll make it two? Two thousand! And who’ll make
it three? Three thousand, once, three thousand, twice, and going and
gone,” said he.
The people cheered, but some of them cried, “We do not
quite understnad what changed its worth.” Swift came the reply: “The touch
of a master’s hand.”
And many a man with life out of tune, and battered and scarred with sin,
Is auctioned cheap to the thoughtless crowd, much like the old violin,
A”mess of pottage,” a glass of wine; a game – and he travels on. “He is going” once, and “going twice, He’s going and almost gone.”
But the Master comes, and the foolish crowd never can quite understand, the worth of a soul and the change that’s wrought by the Touch of the Master’s hand.

The Online Auction may be best for speciality items, collectibles, estate sales, auto sales, business liquidations and personal property. The online auction can be the most cost effective method of auction marketing because of higher visibility, greater market options and lower mobilization costs. Online auctions work even with rain, snow, sleet or hail.
The Live Auction is highly recommended for black tie charity benefit auctions, fine art auctions, antiques, auto auctions, prime real estate, business liquidations and livestock. The live auction may be more expensive because of the hard marketing costs. Even with digital advertising and minimizing print costs, Live Auctions require an experienced, licensed auctioneer, ring man/woman, block clerk, registration people, potentially movers, shipping crew, insurance, security and a greater mobilization cost.
A Simulcast Auction may be best suited for heavy equipment, large machinery, fine artwork, firearms, armor and coins. The Simulcast auction can be effective with groups who are acclimated to buying via live video auction Internet feed. The same mobilization costs of a Live Auction are required as well as the costs of an Online Auction. This makes the Simulcast Auction the most expensive and labor intensive type of auction. Because of the additional cost, a thorough market survey evaluation must be conducted.

Guide to: How to bid at live auctions
Property for Sale New York
Each Auction House and every Auctioneer should have procedures in place to allow for fair bidding, easy checkout and pickup availability. The methods vary for every type of sale: silent auctions, live auctions, simulcast auctions, online auctions and fund a need. To facilitate an effective auction, every person who attends an auction should be a registered bidder or the registered guest of a registered bidder. To Bid, an individual must approach the sign in desk and request the auction terms and conditions. After reading and agreeing to the Auction Terms and Conditions, a buyer fills out their information, and may be required to show identification. Certain auctions may offer the option of avoiding checkout lines by pre registering their preferred payment and pickup method. After registering, a bidder receives their bidder card and quite possibly an auction catalogue.
Bidding at Auction:
The Auctioneer begins the auction and the first lot is brought up for sale. In a live auction setting, a bidder can raise their bidder card for the auctioneer to see they are ready to make a binding offer on the item. Another bidder may raise their number and then your bid is out and the other bidder is the high bid. Raise your paddle or bid card again to signal you are willing to agree to the number the auctioneer is searching for.
Auction bidding tactics:
You may wish to intimidate, out smart, out wit and out bid your competition. We strongly encourage everyone to be polite at any auction. This being said, there is only ONE Unique Original and only ONE owner at the end of the auction. If you must own a lot, make your interest clear to the auctioneer or ring staff. The Ring Men/Women can be your best allies (other than the auctioneer) because the ring staff will fight for you to be recognized or assist you with the bidding process if you wish to bid without being noticed.
Bid to an auctioneer clearly before trying to bid in a sly way. If you try and buy with sly movements without establishing a relationship with the auctioneer or ringman/woman, you may not have your bid taken.
At times it is advisable to jump the bid. If your competitor thinks you will jump the bid, say $500, $1,000, $10,000, or more, they might think twice and not bid again.
It is illegal to collaborate among bidders and price fix. Also, many times if lots don’t reach a reserve they won’t sell anyway so price fixing not only kills the auction but reduces opportunities for all parties involved.
The best way to bid at auction is to do the due diligence on the property for sale and know how much you plan on spending in advance.
Stick with your bidding plan, give yourself 10-15% extra negotiation room and have fun purchasing property at auction.

Q. 10 How does an auctioneer/auction house get paid?
Answer: Auctioneers and the Auction House gets paid several ways:
1. Auctioneers, Auction Staff, Auction Directors and Auction Consultants are paid by either a flat fee and commission or a flat fee or commission (whichever is greater). Each venue is special and has specific requirements.
2. The Auction House may offer inventory at auction and be paid a commission by the consigner (seller) and/or a buyer’s premium from the buyer (purchaser).
3. These rates vary depending on the represented staff involvement investment and mobilization costs.
4. The Manhattan Auction House may take transactions, for which there is a transaction fee. (Organizations, depending upon the venue, may decide to take their own transactions)
5. Referral Fees, Another Auction House or Auctioneer may be recommended for your exquisite Cartier diamond tiara, depending on the rareness, authenticity and quality. Our job, as your contracted auction advisors, is to suggest the best possible market solutions for your inventory. We may refer pieces to another auction company: Christie’s, Sotheby ‘s, or to one of our National Auctioneers’ Association specialists, in which case, they will pay us a referral fee from their commission and they will be your selling agent. We would be acting as your consultant and negotiator.
6. Donations: Yes, it is true, some people have more than they can carry and need assistance in lightening their load. We work with wonderful international and local charities, most likely very happy to receive donations.
7. Repeat Business: The best way we get paid, other than in cash currency or real estate property, is when our happy customers use our services again and refer us to their family and network. This is the highest compliment we can achieve. Thank you for your valued business and beloved referrals.
